The guideline of the German Medical Association for the quality assurance of laboratory medical examinations (Rili-BÄK) of October 18, 2019, has caused a great stir in the world of diagnostics. The guidelines for the HbA1c measurement parameter have been tightened considerably. Whereas coefficients of variation of ± 10 % were previously permitted, the specifications for internal quality assurance for HbA1c will be reduced to ± 3 % in December 2023 after what is now a four-year transition phase. An acceptance limit of ± 8 % already applies to the proficiency tests. This poses a challenge for many laboratories, practices and hospitals.
We talked to Dr. Knop-Hammad, Managing Director of Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene at BG Universitätsklinikum Bergmannsheil Bochum, about this.
