After decades of biological research activities across the globe, there is now enough evidence to show that traditional cell culture (where cells are cultivated in 2D) does not accurately mimic how cells behave in vivo. However, majority of the cellular research today is still carried out in this format, which is unfortunately used to generate data that are not always biologically valid.
Observing cells in 3D is the closest we can get to drawing physiologically relevant conclusions. Of course, there are hurdles when transitioning from 2D to 3D cell culture e.g.: culture conditions, quality of substrate, and inability of certain cells to form spheroids. At Axonlab we understand these pain points and have partnered with innovative companies that help solve these challenges. This website provides a glimpse into some exciting products that can be used to generate and maintain spheroids, organoids or micro-tissues.
Netri DuaLink
This microfluidic chip enables co-culture of up to 16 data points with compartmentalized cell environments using microchannel technology, allowing innervation and optional MEA integration to record neuronal activity from innervated organs.
Netri DuaLink Shift
This microfluidic chip features up to 16 data points and uses microchannels of varying lengths to enable independent co-culture, axodendritic synapse formation, and monitoring of axonal growth kinetics across compartments. With the optional MEA integration, it allows compartment-specific recording of synaptic electrical activity.
Kugelmeiers Sphericalplate 5D
The special geometry of the micro-cavities within each well of the Sphericalplate 5D from Kugelmeiers enables easy spheroid formation and effortless upscaling (750 aggregates per well/9000 per plate). The plates allow for the formation of uniform and standardized spheroids that can be used for basic and translational research.
CELVIVO ClinoStar
The ClinoStar from CELVIVO is a revolutionary device that disrupts existing 3D cell culture technologies, providing best in class performance when it comes to mimicking in vivo performance. It is a stand-alone unit that uses the clinostat principle to generate microtissues in a controlled environment, thereby creating uniform organoids and spheroids in suspension. Moreover, one can monitor the growth of spheroids remotely via a connected tablet thanks to in-built cameras that allow observation of individual reactors.
