You probably know that high cholesterol levels can lead to serious health problems. But did you know that cholesterol itself – a wax-like, fatty substance – is essential for some important body functions?
Cholesterol is a necessary component of cell membranes, including the membranes of nerve cells. It ensures the fluidity and flexibility of the membrane, allowing smooth communication between neurons.
In addition, cholesterol is also involved in the formation of myelin sheaths, which insulate neuronal connections and accelerate the flow of information. Without enough cholesterol, these processes would be disrupted and brain functions could be impaired.
The substance is also indispensable for digestion: it is needed, for example, to form bile acids. Additionally, cholesterol is crucial in the production of important hormones, including cortisol, testosterone and estrogen.
To reap the benefits of cholesterol for our body without compromising health, a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are crucial.
