New Study Shows: Omega-3, Vitamin D, and Exercise Slow Down Biological Aging

A recent study published in Nature Aging demonstrates that a targeted combination of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and regular exercise can measurably slow biological aging. Conducted by an international research team led by Heike Bischoff-Ferrari (University of Zurich) and Steve Horvath (UCLA), the study analyzed epigenetic markers in over 700 individuals aged 70 years.

Participants in the clinical DO-HEALTH study took 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids and 2,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily for three years and completed a 30-minute exercise program three times per week. The results showed that these measures could slow down the aging process by three to four months—regardless of gender, age, or body mass index.

Of particular relevance, individuals with a vitamin D level of ≥20 ng/ml showed stronger positive effects in slowing biological aging. This highlights the importance of regular monitoring of vitamin D levels for targeted supplementation. While vitamin D alone had no significant effect on epigenetic aging markers, it showed enhanced benefits when combined with omega-3 and exercise, particularly for the PhenoAge marker.

Vitamin D Testing in Pharmacies with the Rapiread CubeReader

The study emphasizes the relevance of an optimal vitamin D level for healthy aging. To ensure targeted supplementation, regular monitoring of individual vitamin D levels is essential.

For pharmacies, we offer the Rapiread CubeReader, a simple and reliable solution for determining vitamin D levels. This diagnostic device enables fast and precise on-site measurements, allowing customers to receive an informed recommendation for vitamin D supplementation.
