This year, Axonlab is once again supporting projects that make a tangible difference – where help is urgently needed and directly reaches those it is meant for. In 2025, we are proud to support two charitable initiatives in Africa: the Ghana Switzerland Hospital Technicians (GSHT) association and the Namutumba Community Hospital in Uganda.

Our goal is to contribute, together with our local partners, to improving healthcare infrastructure and ultimately the quality of life for patients in a sustainable way.

The GSHT association – Swiss technical expertise for better healthcare in Ghana

The Ghana Switzerland Hospital Technicians (GSHT) is a non-profit, volunteer-run organisation based in Switzerland that has been dedicated to humanitarian projects in Ghana for many years. All members – both in Switzerland and Ghana – work on a voluntary basis, remaining politically and religiously neutral.

Their focus is on the technical backbone of hospitals, ensuring that facilities have the basic infrastructure they need to provide medical care: reliable electricity, water supply and safe electrical installations. After all, a stable energy supply is the lifeline of every hospital.

All GSHT projects are carried out and supervised by experienced volunteer technicians on site. Local craftsmen are actively involved, trained and fairly compensated, creating long-term impact through skills transfer and local empowerment.

Axonlab’s specific support: Renewing the power supply at John Paul Catholic Hospital Jamasi

One of GSHT’s current projects is the John Paul Catholic Hospital in Jamasi, a town north of Kumasi that provides healthcare and emergency services for around 250,000 people.

Back in 2015, GSHT began improving the hospital’s infrastructure by constructing a power house and installing a 65 kVA diesel generator – generously donated by Migros Genossenschaft Zürich. This first milestone significantly improved stability, but over the years the hospital has expanded, adding several new buildings. As a result, the existing electrical system can no longer meet the growing demand.

   

With Axonlab’s support, GSHT will now be able to install a new high-voltage line and a centralised power distribution system. This upgrade will ensure that the hospital can continue to operate safely and reliably in the years to come.

Continuing our support in Uganda: The Namutumba Community Hospital

In 2024, Axonlab supported the Namutumba Community Hospital in Uganda. A healthcare facility founded and led by Job Zilaba, who is deeply committed to providing accessible medical care to the local population (Read last year's interview with Job Zilaba about the history and development of Namutumba Community Hospital).

Thanks to our contribution last year, the hospital was able to purchase urgently needed infant incubators and radiant warmers for its neonatal unit. This year, we are continuing our partnership and funding the purchase of modern surgical lights, further improving the quality of care for patients.

We deeply value the tireless efforts of organisations like GSHT and dedicated individuals such as Job Zilaba, who use their expertise and compassion to strengthen healthcare systems where they are needed most. Their commitment is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when professionalism, humanity and responsibility come together.

By supporting their work, we aim to help ensure that quality medical care becomes accessible to all – not a privilege, but a universal right.
